I have worked as a ceramic sculptor for over thirty-five years. My work is often considered a homage to ancient civilizations, offering hints and traces from the past. Born in Carthage, Tunisia, I was surrounded by Roman and Phoenician ruins, which have had a profound influence on my work.
When creating my sculptures, surface design, multiple glazing, and textural features are important elements of each piece. My goal is to create work with qualities that are similar to those dug out of the ground or found at the bottom of the sea. I have explored the human and animal form as well as vessels and orbs.
Penny Michel is best known for ceramic sculpture. Her sculptures are big and bold using line, texture and color to call to mind ancient ruins. Much of her inspiration comes from a childhood spent in Carthage, Tunisa where the city is filled with Roman and Phoenican ruins. She has been working for over 35 years making large and small sculptures, bowls, urns and platters.
